Guardians’ Remarkable Run Ends Two Wins Short of World Series

The Guardians’ season ended on October 19 with a 7–3 loss to the Rays in ALCS Game 6. Cleveland lost the series 4–2 after holding a 2–1 lead, finishing two wins short of a World Series berth. Their late-season surge made the ending particularly painful. On August 19, Cleveland was 61–66 and 5½ games behind the division leader. A 24–11 finish secured a third consecutive division title. The Guardians then overcame an 0–2 deficit against the White Sox in the Division Series, winning three straight to advance. Trade Deadline additions Jo Adell, Nathaniel Lowe and Foster Griffin helped fuel that run. Cleveland scored 232 runs after the Deadline, eighth in MLB. But its offense stalled in the ALCS: after scoring seven runs in Game 1, the Guardians managed only 10 across the remaining five games. Manager Stephen Vogt acknowledged the sting of elimination while expressing pride in the players, coaches and staff. Catcher Austin Hedges said the disappointment was especially difficult because he believed the group could win the World Series. Rookies Travis Bazzana, Chase DeLauter and Parker Messick provided encouraging signs for the future. José Ramírez will also look to regain his best form after undergoing left hamate surgery in June, with a full offseason to recover. Cleveland’s wait for its first championship since 1948 continues. The immediate feeling is disappointment, but an emerging young core offers a foundation for another attempt next season.
