Ashby Sets Single-Postseason Relief Record With 18 Straight Scoreless Innings

Aaron Ashby established a single-postseason record for consecutive scoreless innings by a reliever in World Series Game 4. The Brewers left-hander retired all seven batters he faced, extending his streak to 18 innings. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Ashby surpassed Andrew Miller’s previous mark of 16 innings, set in 2016. He also became the first pitcher in postseason history to make at least seven consecutive scoreless appearances while recording five or more outs in each. Ashby entered a 2-2 game in the ninth and retired the heart of Tampa Bay’s lineup. He followed with another perfect inning in the 10th and recorded the first out of the 11th before manager Pat Murphy removed him after noticing a drop in his sinker velocity. Ashby said afterward that he felt good physically. The performance continued a remarkable turnaround. He missed the entire 2023 season following left shoulder surgery and struggled after returning before Milwaukee moved him into relief. Over the past two seasons, he has posted a 2.71 ERA across 118 appearances, developing into a trusted option for extended outings. The Brewers ultimately lost 4-3 in the 12th inning after Ashby had departed, leaving their championship bid unfinished. His availability for Game 5 remains uncertain and will depend on how he feels during his usual preparation. Ashby said he would be ready if his condition allows him to pitch again.
