Walker Kessler is preparing to make his debut as the Los Angeles Lakers' new starting center, embracing the expectations that come with joining one of the NBA's most historic franchises.

Acquired from the Utah Jazz this offseason, Kessler is returning after missing nearly all of last season due to a shoulder injury that required surgery to repair a torn labrum. He is expected to make his regular-season debut against the Golden State Warriors on October 21.

The Lakers acquired Kessler in a sign-and-trade deal involving two first-round picks and two pick swaps, signing the 7-foot-2 center to a four-year, $130 million contract.

A major reason for the move was Kessler's potential fit alongside Luka Dončić. His ability to finish lobs, set screens and protect the rim could provide Los Angeles with the interior presence it has been seeking.

Dončić has already praised Kessler's defensive impact, while head coach JJ Redick believes the young center has the potential to become an All-Star-level defensive anchor. However, Redick acknowledged that adjusting to a new team and increased responsibilities will take time.

Kessler now joins a legendary lineage of Lakers big men that includes George Mikan, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Shaquille O'Neal. Rather than feeling overwhelmed by the pressure, he views the opportunity as motivation to help Los Angeles compete for another championship.
